Las Vegas 51s looking for a new name
It was 36 seasons ago on April 10, 1983, the then-Las Vegas Stars began playing professional baseball as a member of the Pacific Coast League at Cashman Field. After an ownership change and 18 seasons as the Stars (1983-2000), it was decided that the team’s name would change to the Las Vegas 51s.
Now, with so much ahead for the 51s, a new ballpark in Downtown Summerlin and a new Major League affiliation in 2019, it’s the perfect time to rebrand the team once again.
“We are moving to the beautiful new Las Vegas Ballpark at Downtown Summerlin and a new Major League affiliation in 2019,” 51s President/COO Don Logan said. “Our ownership group, The HowardHughes Corporation wants the transition to be a home run complete with a new name and new logo.”
The 51s are launching the “Name the Team Sweepstakes.” The 51s are looking for community input and people can weigh in with their ideas at the 51s website (lv51.com) or Facebook page (Facebook/51sBaseball). On Friday, May 4 the team will conduct a random drawing of all entries to win the Grand Prize—a $500 shopping spree of team merchandise when the new Las Vegas Ballpark at Downtown Summerlin opens in 2019. Official Sweepstakes’ rules are available at lv51.com. The 51swill be looking to the community for its advice through Monday, April 30.
Tickets for all 51s home games can be purchased at the SCE Federal Credit Union Box Office at Cashman Field. The box office is open Monday-Friday (non-game days) from Noon to 4:30 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased through Ticketmaster (1-800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com).
