2014 Great Nevada Picture Hunt
Attention Nevada photographers! The 2014 Great Nevada Picture Hunt is now open for submissions. For 37 years, we’ve highlighted the most beautiful images from around the Silver State, captured by local photographers. You don’t have to make your living shooting photos; you just have to love Nevada and her wonderful scenery and people. Check out the rules below, and best of luck!
Winning entries will be published in the September/October 2014 issue and on our website. Awards are given for:
Grand Prize: $250 gift card
2nd Place: $150 gift card
3rd Place: $100 gift card
4th place: $50 gift card
All gift cards are courtesy of Gordon’s Photo Service and are redeemable in-store or online. Honorable Mentions will also be named, and all winners and Honorable Mentions will receive frame-ready certificates.
Rules:
Deadline to enter is Tuesday, July 1, 2014 5 p.m. Pacific time.
Please include your name and contact information, along with the location and detailed caption information for each submission.
Limit of four (4) entries per photographer, maximum.
Photos MUST be from 2011 or later.
JPEG is the preferred format for submissions. Files size should be 400KB to 2MB per photo, with a 10MB maximum per email.

Grand Prize • “Light Glyphs” • Neil Lockhart, Reno • neillockhartphotography.com In the Lousetown area north of Virginia City lies Lagomarsino Canyon, one of the state’s most intriguing collections of petroglyphs and the setting of this epic nighttime scene. “The image was created by light-painting the rock formations with a large portable spotlight, as well as a small Mini Maglite for the glyphs themselves,” says Lockhart, who has a passion for night photography. He strategically included the Milky Way. “I can only imagine how bright the light of the stars must have been at the time the glyphs were created,” he adds.
2nd Place • “Life Guard Off Duty” • Jarrod Lopiccolo, Carson City • flickr.com/jarrodlopiccolo Lopiccolo captured this image on September 23, 2011. “My brother and his family were in town from Hawaii, and my wife and I took them to Sand Harbor to catch the sunset,” he says. “There is nothing like relaxing on the sand in late summer/early fall watching nature’s colors change before your eyes.” Sand Harbor is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Tahoe.
3rd Place • “Rhyolite Ghost Town” • Wayne Posner, Las Vegas • wayneposner.com Posner took his first trip to Rhyolite’s Goldwell Open Air Museum on June 22, 2013. “Since I had a little LED flashlight with me, I decided I’d try my hand at some light-painting,” he says. “I wanted to give life to some additional ‘ghosts’ that were flying around this central apparition. This was achieved by waving my flashlight through the air while pointed directly at the camera.”
4th Place • “Star Dust” • Michael Lindberg, Reno • 500px.com/skifast25 Even in winter, Lindberg had to work hard to get this spectacular shot of Sand Mountain Recreation Area, east of Fallon. “I went in February 2013 during a cold weekend in hopes of seeing zero motorized vehicles,” he says. “Unfortunately, there were still plenty of people, and I had to hike all over to find sand that had not been touched. Luckily my sweat and determination rewarded me with this scene.”
