Reno

Once again, the Reno River Festival brought thousands of people to the heart of downtown Reno for its 7th annual event at the Truckee River Whitewater Park at Wingfield, May 7-9, 2010. Hosting approximately 20,420 visitors, athletes and spectators, the Festival's annual Run Amuck race saw a record-breaking number of signups with nearly 1,000 runners in the 2.5-mile obstacle course and mud run. Despite less-than-desirable weather during Sunday's competitions, Festival organizers are happy with the outcome of the event and plans are in place for the 8th annual Reno River Festival, May 6-8, 2011.

Taking top honors in this year's pro freestyle invitational competitions were Nick Troutman, Jason Craig and Eric Jackson in the men's division and Emily Jackson, Ruth Gordon and Devon Barker in the women's heats. Sunday's open boatercross competition brought Emily Jackson to the podium's top spot once again, followed by Devon Barker and Nicole Mansfield in the women's division and Eric Jackson, Jarod Seiler and Colin Kemp in the open men's.

The Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) race took its first-ever trip down the Truckee with Dan Gavere and Ruth Gordon in first place in the men's and women's races, respectively, followed by Mike Bennet and Donyelle Dewey in second and Jay Kincaid and Allison Bruner in third. The Downriver race, which coincided with the 3.5-mile SUP race, awarded winners Amy DeLosa and Sean Morley top honors.

Another first in the history of the Reno River Festival, the whitewater park hosted the 2010 Alt Games Boatercross and Freestyle Kayaking Championships presented by CBS College Sports Network. Jonny Myers took home the crown in the boatercross division followed by Tyler Muntz and Amanda Marusich. The freestyle podium greeted Pete DeLosa, Cameron Bender and Kyle Hardwah.

Adding to the excitement, Saturday's Run Amuck fun run saw 460 two-person teams of costumed runners parading across the stage and dashing through the mud for a chance at top honors in both the costume contest and the race. The annual costume contest brought approximately 300 people to Wingfield Stage with "Siegfried & Roy" stealing the show — stuffed tigers and all. Second place, "Nacho Cinco," a group of children and mothers dressed as professional wrestlers, and the "Rehab Role Models" rounded out the contest, which took place just before the 2 p.m. race. With a time of 24 minutes and 29 seconds, "Captain Bananahammock and the Grape Smuggler," Chris Badolato and Kirk Ferris, took first place, followed by "Dead Men Running," Jeff Huxtold and Jake McCain in second with a time of 25 minutes and 26 seconds. The "Chic Geeks," Maya Vasquez and Bailey Wolf, took third-to-last place with a time of one hour and six minutes.

The 8th annual Reno River Festival takes place May 6-8, 2011 at the Truckee River Whitewater Park at Wingfield in downtown Reno.

It's time to play a game...Fright Dome takes over The Adventuredome at Circus Circus beginning Friday, Oct. 1. For the second year, Fright Dome will partner with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures to theme SAW, one of its five haunted houses. Additionally, Lionsgate's MY BLOODY VALENTINE will reveal its horror house this fall. This season Fright Dome is guaranteed to terrify even the bravest of visitors with all new themes and scare zones.

Fright Dome's houses bring together plots from various installments of the legendary horror movie franchise SAW, and the newly added popular horror film, MY BLOODY VALENTINE. Interactive, handcrafted replicas of the "games" set by Jigsaw in the popular SAW saga will be among the many things guests have to look forward to this year. MY BLOODY VALENTINE is currently out on DVD and Lionsgate is expected to release SAW 3D nationwide this Halloween.

"We've always had one of the top haunted attractions in the nation and partnering with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures for a second year will make it bigger and better than ever," said Jason Egan, owner and creator of Fright Dome. "The SAW and MY BLOODY VALENTINE films cut to the core of human fear and we're exploiting that to its fullest potential."

"We are honored for SAW to be a part of Fright Dome for the second year in a row, and eagerly anticipate the reveal of the MY BLOODY VALENTINE haunted house. With the seventh installment of SAW slated to be released this Halloween in 3-D, fans will be immersed in SAW like never before, both through the 3D theatrical experience and in Fright Dome. We are excited to bring the characters and settings of both movie going experiences to the Las Vegas market place, where people from all over the word can take part in the horror," added President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions Jason Constantine.

Egan adds to the excitement and terror of Fright Dome this year by adding three of the world's most notorious and macabre magicians in the all-new "Show of Magic & Horror." Guests can enjoy a combination of shock, illusion, unsettling conjuring and non-stop mayhem from Dixie Dooley, Kevin James and Dan Sperry. Dark and fog-filled, Fright Dome sets a chilling atmosphere with roaming characters, high-powered strobes, multi-colored lasers and five acres of fright made up of all new extreme scare zones, rides, attractions and five haunted houses. No place left unhaunted, demons will descend from the ceiling as guests walk underneath.

"The Adventuredome and Fright Dome partnership has exceeded our expectations and continues to be one of the must-see, haunted attractions in the country year after year," said Don Thrasher, president and chief operating officer of Circus Circus.

Fright Dome is open from 7 p.m. to midnight Oct. 1-31 on select nights. General admission tickets are $34.95 and fast pass tickets are available for an additional $15 which allow express line entry for all five haunted houses.

Entertainers for this year's Dinner Dance will feature David John and the Comstock Cowboys with special guest star, Wylie and the Wild West.

Wylie & The Wild West will begin the concert at 4:30 pm. They have played thousands of gigs, delighting audiences around the world with their unique brand of good-time cowboy music. Whether playing for a crowd of 50 or 5,000, Wylie's goal is always the same: "To win a crowd with good music and make 'em feel like they got their money's worth." Followed by David John and the Comstock Cowboys, this band choose not to travel that crowded highway where music is destined to change at the whim of each generation. Instead, these artists have built their sound on a more solid foundation. Their music is timeless and speaks to many generations. Both entertainers are guaranteed to delight Candy Dance Dinner Dance attendees!

The ticket price is $30 for adults and $15 for children age 12 and under. All dinner dance tickets will be sold in advance. The deadline to purchase dinner dance tickets is 4:30 pm, Friday, September 17. Dance-only tickets are $15. All tickets are non-refundable.

The dinner dance doors and no-host bar will open at 4 p.m. Trip Tip or chicken, rosemary potatoes, green salad, corn on the cob, garlic bread and dessert catered by Genoa Country Store, will be served at 6:30pm. Beer, wine, margaritas, and soft drinks will be available at the no-host bar. And of course, the tradition continues with free candy.

The first Candy Dance was organized in 1919 by Genoa resident, Lillian Virgin Finnegan, to raise money to purchase street lights for the town. The dance was held at the Raycraft Hotel, and Lillian and other Genoa women made candy to serve at the dance. In the years that followed, the annual Candy Dance continued as a way to raise money to pay the town's electric bill for the street lights, and was considered the "Big Event of the Season" by people in the Carson Valley, Reno and surrounding communities. The Arts and Crafts Faire was added in the 1970s and, later, became the two-day event that continues today. The funds raised by the Town of Genoa during the Candy Dance weekend provide a substantial portion of the town's annual budget.

New to the Las Vegas lineup of Tuesday afternoon family-friendly comedy shows is Brian Hoffman's "Remembering Red—A Tribute to Red Skelton." It's a nostalgic trip back in time with one of "America's favorite clowns". A very funny show for the entire family.

Las Vegas has become a mecca for entertainment. In fact many of the reality shows including "America's Got Talent" often come to Las Vegas to film their show. Most of the shows in town are adult orientated and have an age restriction so people under 21 can't attend.

There is one Las Vegas comedy show that started on a Monday afternoon that people of all ages have attended. Brian Hoffman has been impersonating Red Skelton in Las Vegas for over two years. Fans have been asking if he would add more shows to his schedule. Starting in late Sept 2010 you can reminisce with Brian on Tuesday afternoons at 2 o'clock.

Now Brian's show schedule is as follows; Monday and Tuesday at 2pm and Saturday at 9pm. Each and every show is packed with heart felt memories and routines expertly performed in such a way that audience members feel like they are actually seeing Red perform.

This tribute show is full of the silly antics that Red was famous for including the two seagulls; Gertrude and Heathcliffe, the dim-witted country bumpkin; Clem Kadiddlehopper, the ever-loveable Freddie the Freeloader and a heart felt moment as Brian recites Red's definition of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Remembering Red - A Tribute to Red Skelton is performed in the Royal Resort showroom every Monday and Tuesday afternoon at 2pm and Saturdays at 9pm. The Resort is located at 99 Convention Center Drive Las Vegas NV 89109.

Washoe Valley

Excitement among competitors, sponsors and equestrian enthusiasts is building daily for the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby (FM Hunter Derby) in Washoe Valley on Saturday, September 19, 2010.

"The back gate ‘buzz' is all about Franktown Meadows," said Aimee LaFayette, a family spokeswoman for the host equestrian facility. "Since this is a history-making event they're really curious about all of the extra elements we're planning," she continued. "When we describe everything to them you can almost see their mind working as they consider what horse they could ride in the competition."

Hunter competitions are very specific. It takes a very special type of horse to compete.

"They say, ‘I think I have a horse I could ride in that.' They're being very selective about who they would bring out (to Nevada)," LaFayette explained.

FM Derby has its sights set on being the best Hunter Derby in the country this year. To that end they're offering a champagne brunch, classic car display, promenade of shops, "Calling of the Hounds" and a "Calcutta Auction".

Calling of the Hounds

Among those eager for Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby, you'd be hard pressed to beat the excitement level the 50 hounds participating in the "Calling of the Hounds" will exhibit just before the derby gets underway.

When the horn blows calling the hounds to hunt — the Red Rock Walker Hounds are beyond ready. Their frenzied excitement is something to behold.

All 50 hounds will parade the FM Derby course with their master. The inclusion of the celebrated "Calling of the Hounds" in the FM Derby program acknowledges the historical role hounds played during fox hunts.

"The hounds all want to go to work!" said Lynn Lloyd of Red Rock Hounds, whose hounds will participate in the pre-derby entertainment. "They'll make certain everyone knows all equestrian Hunter show ring competitions started with fox hunters."

Calcutta Auction

Prior to the start of the competition there will be an audience-pleasing "Calcutta Auction." A "Calcutta" is where bidding on each contestant and its rider allows members of the audience to "buy" a contestant. The winning contestant then "splits" its portion of the purse with the audience member who purchased the team. Since the "Calcutta" is done in good fun and the audience portion of the proceeds is typically donated to charity.

FM Derby

The Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby will feature the nation's best horses and riders competing for a $25,000 purse, which is split among the top winners.

FM Derby is a member event of the Chronicle of the Horse/United States Hunter Jumper Association International Derby Series presented by Dietrich Insurance.

The series is designed to bring the basic principles of riding back into hunter derby competitions by using challenging courses, interesting jump materials and a wide variety in fence construction.

Horses and riders will soar over 10 jumps. Some jumps more than 4 feet high. They will jump obstacles similar to those found in fox hunting such as a stone wall, a board fence or gate, a coop, hedge, brush logs and natural foliage.

Hunter derby horses are judged not on time but on conformation and their ability to maneuver the course during the competition. Judges look for the correct number of strides between jumps, the appearance of the horse during the jump and how well the horse listens to the rider.

The great showmanship and athleticism of competitors will combine with a modern pageant setting and a full range of social activities including a promenade of shops and a total culinary experience at the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby.

The Charity

This event is a unique fundraiser for Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides grants and assistance to several organizations in Northern Nevada and Northern California. Parasol was founded in 1996 and it supports public learning and charitable giving, focusing on long-term commitments to the community well being.

The Host Facility

Franktown Meadows Equestrian Facility is owned by the MacLean family, which has been in the area since the 1960's. Lynne Garnett, a MacLean family member who runs Franktown Meadows, says hosting an event such as the Hunter Derby has been a long-time goal for the 41-acre state-of-the-art facility between Reno and Carson City. Franktown Meadows is the perfect setting to showcase the event.

Heritage Day El Grito, September 16, is the most celebrated day of the year in Mexico. This year is the Bicentennial of Mexican independence from Spain. September 15th to 18th marks the celebration of many other Latin America countries' independence from Spanish rule, including Chile, Guatemala and most of Central America; and hence the dedication of September as Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. The focus of Hispanic Heritage Days is to honor the accomplishments of Latinos through a celebration that invites a diverse group of locals and tourists to enjoy on-going activities for all ages and interests.

The expansion of Hispanic Heritage Days from a single afternoon to two full days was inspired after the success of the 2010 Cinco de Mayo Celebration held at Grand Sierra Resort in May, 2010. Jose Valencia, owner of Big Daddy's Barbeque, coordinated Cinco de Mayo and will handle all aspects of Hispanic Heritage Days. Proceeds from the event will help benefit Nevada Hispanic Services to provide local educational, health and social programs.

Boulder City

Many images come to mind when thinking about the Great Depression-images of forlorn families desperate for hope and wondering about the source of their next meal. Some of those images so memorable to us now were shot by Margaret Bourke-White, whose work graced the first issue of Life magazine in 1935. Another unforgettable snapshot from that era is the excitement that baseball legend Babe Ruth could ignite despite the worry over hard times.

Scholars Doris Dwyer and Frank Mullen Jr. will bring these two figures to life during the Boulder City Chautauqua, Sept. 17-18 at the Boulder Theater in downtown Boulder City. The theme this year is "That Dam Depression" in honor of the 75th anniversary of the dedication of Hoover Dam.

Chautauqua is how you wish history had been taught when you were in school. Scholar-actors research a historical figure, then perform a monologue in character on stage. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions afterward, which the chautauquans answer both in character as actors and out of character as scholars.

Chautauqua is a tradition begun in the 19th century to bring the knowledge of a college education to people in far-flung places who could not afford the time or tuition to get a higher education. The tradition has been revived in Nevada with the Nevada Humanities Chautauqua Festival held in Northern Nevada in June and the Boulder City Chautauqua held in September.

Both Dwyer and Mullen are experienced chautauquans. Dwyer, a history professor at Western Nevada College, has portrayed Margaret Breen of the Donner Party, Sarah Royce, a California pioneer, environmentalist Rachel Carson, spiritualist Aimee Semple McPherson and reformer Margaret Sanger. Her specialty is American history with an emphasis on women of the Overland Trail.

Mullen, an investigative reporter for the Reno Gazette-Journal, has been performing chautauqua since 1999, taking on figures including Henry VIII, Albert Einstein, Ulysses S. Grant, J.P. Morgan, John C. Fremont and Edward R. Murrow.

The Boulder City Chautauqua will begin Friday, Sept. 17, with a panel discussion of real local historical figures, including Laura Kelly Smith, a member of the Godbey family, who moved to Boulder City in its early days; Depression-era historian Dennis McBride, founding curator of the Boulder City Hoover Dam Museum; and retired state archivist Guy Rocha. College of Southern Nevada professor Michael Green will moderate.

All shows begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Boulder Theatre, 1225 Arizona St., Boulder City. Tickets for all events are $15 apiece. Proceeds support the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association.

"We are honored to celebrate this huge milestone with the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club," said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. "We've been a part of Ho'olaule'a since 2007 and have seen the event grow in popularity. It's incredible to see the tremendous support from, not only Southern Nevada residents, but from travelers who choose our city as their destination to experience the island culture."

Last year's event was a huge success. Over 40,000 people attended the festival, an increase of over 10,000 people from 2008.

A portion of the proceeds from Ho'olaule'a helps fund the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club Founders Scholarship, which supports Hawaiians in their quest to attain higher levels of education. The club has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships since 1987, with the majority of the recipients being of native Hawaiian ancestry.

Las Vegas

Hailed by audiences and critics alike as the greatest illusionist of our time, David Copperfield has elevated the ancient art of magic to new heights and redefined it over the past few decades. And now he is bringing his magic back to Vegas for a special show at the Hollywood Theater located inside the MGM Grand.

The man behind such illusions as the Statue of Liberty disappearance and walking through the Great Wall of China, Copperfield began his career in magic as a child performing illusions in his hometown of Metuchen, New Jersey. He began performing professionally at age 12 and became the youngest person ever to be admitted to the Society of American Magicians. So advanced in his years, by sixteen Copperfield was already teaching a course in magic at New York University.

During his years at college, Copperfield was cast as the lead in the Chicago Musical, "The Magic Man." Copperfield acted, sang and created all the magic in the show, which eventually became the longest running musical in Chicago history. Due to Copperfield's impressive illusions in the play, he was chosen to host and star in "The Magic of ABC." During his time on the show, Copperfield created and performed impressive, mind-boggling illusions before a live audience. Since then Copperfield has gone on to baffle audiences all over the world performing over 550 shows per year to sold out audiences.

Some of Copperfield's most famous tricks and illusions include making a duck magically appear in a bucket held by an audience member, having a deadly scorpion choose the card picked out by another audience volunteer, or transporting himself and a fan to a Hawaii beach.

Copperfield's show at the MGM Grand gives audiences the opportunity to see some of the larger-than-life illusions Copperfield is so famous for. Demonstrating similar and equally amazing illusions like making the Stature of Liberty vanish, Copperfield takes this opportunity to create mind-boggling illusions that defy all reality. Audience interaction is a big part of the show as he picks a person at random for almost every illusion. In order to keep his show authentic Copperfield throws a Frisbee or huge ball into the crowd, proving all of his illusions are not set-up with audience plants.

Unlike other magic shows in Las Vegas, Copperfield does not incorporate flashy show girls, dancing or over the top production elements to supplement his illusions. His magic is excitement enough for the crowd!

Come see for yourself "the greatest magician of our time" at the Hollywood Theater in MGM Grand. You'll be amazed at what you thought you saw when David Copperfield takes the stage!—BestofVegas.com

Back by popular demand, Zowie Bowie is making a return to Red Rock Resort. The duo brings its unique blend of today's hottest dance, hip-hop and Top 40 music to audiences at Rocks Lounge every Friday, beginning Sept. 3, 2010.

Zowie Bowie features the musical talents and unbridled energy of Chris Phillips, Marley Taylor and a high-voltage band that creates a sizzling and sexy sound that has become a Las Vegas mainstay. The two moved to Vegas in 2006 from Scottsdale, Ariz. to open and perform weekly at Red Rock Resort, where they quickly went on to become the city's favorite local band. After three years, the pair moved to the Strip where they performed both their nightclub dance concert and their dream of an authentic Vintage Vegas show. Though it was their dream, the couple realized that performing for the locals at Red Rock Resort was really where they wanted to be.

"It was amazing getting to perform on the Strip, however we missed the fans that our shows at Red Rock brought in week after week," said Zowie Bowie Lead Singer Chris Phillips. "After hearing an overwhelming response from locals that they too missed us at Red Rock, we realized that is where we truly belong and the move back just feels right."

"We're excited to have Zowie Bowie back at Rocks Lounge," said Judy Alberti, vice president of entertainment for Station Casinos. "They're adding to the unparalleled entertainment we offer at Red Rock from our Sandbar outdoor poolside concerts this summer that features top artists such as Rob Thomas, Don Henley and Train, to our Party on the Rocks concert series every Saturday night. And with the newly opened Yard House to start off the night, the party will keep going, ever reinforcing that Red Rock is a one-stop destination for dining and entertainment."

Zowie Bowie will perform every Friday night, beginning Sept. 3 at Rocks Lounge, Red Rock Resort's intimate 150-seat venue. Doors open at 10 p.m. and the show will start at 11 p.m. The show is open to adults 21 years or older and there is no cost for admission. VIP bottle service is available upon request. Hawthorne

This September marks a special occasion for the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum as well as the Hawthorne Army Ammunition Depot (pictured). The Museum will be celebrating its eighth anniversary, and the Army Depot will be celebrating its 80th. Thus, the Board of Directors and volunteer staff of the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum decided to mark the occasion with what we are choosing to call our "880 Celebration." It isn't every day that one has the opportunity to share the stage with such a longstanding and community sustaining organization as that of the Hawthorne Army Ammunition Depot. So, what better time to bring attention to these two entities and take the opportunity to illustrate the connection one has to the other.

If you have not had the opportunity to visit the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum in the past (which by the way has free admission), perhaps you would not know of the connection we have to the Hawthorne Army Ammunition Depot. In fact, you might not know that the word ordnance, which has its origin in the 14th century, means ammunition, and military weapons. And, you might not know that the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum has a rather large collection of these specific military items on display. Further, we have photographs that date back to the early days of the City of Hawthorne as well as the early days of the Hawthorne Army Ammunition Depot.

The Hawthorne Army Ammunition Depot was established in early 1930 after the Lake Denmark, New Jersey explosion which injured many in the nearby towns. The Hawthorne Ordnance Museum came about after many years of work by a small group of private citizens. In the beginning, it was thought that the Museum would be a good way to preserve the history of the local Army Base. However, it grew into much more than that over time and now it holds pieces of history from the local Army Base as well as other military installations around the country. And of course, the City of Hawthorne and so many of its residents who may have been employed at the base; are now memorialized on and between the walls of our beloved Museum.

So, this September, as we mark this very special occasion and join our friends at the Hawthorne Army Ammunition Depot in there celebration, we hope you will make a point of stopping by and taking a look at the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum. Come and see what a small group of dedicated volunteers have done for not only the local residents of Hawthorne, but, for the State of Nevada, and yes, our great country as well. Come and enjoy the History we have to offer. Come and share a little bit of this History with other members of the community who; with a great deal of pride, call this small, patriotic community HOME.

Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off

September 1 - September 6

Sparks

The country's favorite free rib festival is back! This year's Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off, the 22nd annual, will run Wednesday, September 1 through Monday, September 6, once again transforming the Labor Day holiday on Victorian Square in downtown Sparks into a must-attend culinary, music, craft, and family end-of-summer affair.

Daily hours for all the fun - the rib cookers, live entertainment, expansive kids area and multiple city blocks of craft vendors - are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6. And remember, there is no admission charge!

Attendance estimates show the cook-off continues to be one of the largest barbeque events in North America, with more than 500,000 visitors and more than 100 tons of ribs served in 2009. Large activities within the event, including a world-championship rib-eating contest, and top-notch entertainment - not to mention the best BBQ in the country - all come together to draw massive amounts of people to Victorian Square.

"The Nugget Rib Cook-off has grown over the years to become one of the largest BBQ events in the country. People visit from literally all over the world," said Beth Cooney, Executive Director of Marketing at John Ascuaga's Nugget. "Last year we again encountered record crowds. Our mid-week days were at or near capacity, while the weekends were as strong as ever. We're certainly looking forward to this year."

Rib Cookers

Similar large crowds are expected in 2010. Free top-name entertainment and a continued multitude of activities are planned. But the world's best ribs are what carry the day. Twenty-four of the country's most celebrated and talented rib cookers will once again feed event goers while competing for a total cash purse of $14,500 and the title of, "Best of the West," - a designation many cookers consider to be the ultimate prize in high-volume competitive BBQ. Desperado BBQ & Rib Co. of Hinckley, Ohio, will be back after finishing first in 2010, as will 2009 winner Bone Daddy's of Midland, Michigan. Also back to defend its 2007 and 2006 titles, Famous Dave's BBQ of Plymouth, MN will face stiff competition from a host of returning champions, including Mt. Laurel, New Jersey's Butch's Smack Your Lips BBQ (2005 winner), Martinsville, Virginia's Checkered Pig BBQ (2004) and three-time champion ('00, '02, '03) Texas Outlaw BBQ of Elizabethtown, Kentucky. New this year is actually a returning favorite, Willingham's of Memphis, Tennessee.

Rib Eating Competition

Returning to this year's Cook-off, the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), now known as Major League Eating (MLE), the governing body of all stomach-centric sports, will host the fifth annual Best in the West Nugget World Rib Eating Championships at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, at the Main Stage area. The country's best competitive eaters will vie for $5,000 and the title of World Champion.

The IFOCE conducts more than 90 events annually, including the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, NY. It's estimated the top competitors will consume seven-plus pounds of meat during the 12-minute competition. Three-time winner, prolific gurgitator Joey Chestnut, is expected to attend, along with more than one dozen other top-flight athletes. Last year, Chicago resident and world No. 2 Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti shocked the competitive eating world by narrowly defeating Chestnut, handing him his first loss in the Nugget's four-year rib eating contest run. Chestnut still holds the event and world record, set in 2008, with an astounding 9.8 pounds of rib meat!

Entertainment

This year's main-stage free entertainment lineup, beginning Wednesday evening: Mumbo Gumbo, Del Castillo, Jack Ingram, Gin Blossoms, Asia and Buster Blue. The main stage begins nightly at 7 p.m. and Monday at 3 p.m. Music at the U.S. Bank stage (West end of the main street) begins daily when the event opens. In all, more than 40 bands will play on multiple stages throughout the six-day Victorian Square event. And, again this year, there will be daily demonstrations from Mike Peters and the Kansas City Barbeque Society's "Great American BBQ Tour."

Shuttle Service

Daily shuttle service from the Legends at Sparks Marina will run Wednesday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. There is no service on Monday. Legends will be the only shuttle drop-off/pick-up location this year.

Kids' Area

Children will delight in an array of rides and activities. The kids' area will be located on the west side of Victorian Plaza, near the US Bank Stage, and will include an obstacle course, a bounce house, a slide, and a mechanical swing. Ride tickets will be available for purchase just outside the kids' area.

An eye-popping Art Car that started out as a VW but now literally features the world (among other things) and a film called "Automorphosis" will be showcased at "Wild Wheels: Art Car Day" at the National Automobile Museum, The Harrah Collection, in downtown Reno on Sat., Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special two-for-one admission prices are part of "Wild Wheels: Art Car Day."

Blank's First Art Car

"Oh My God!" was the first Art Car created by artist and filmmaker Harrod Blank. He has been continually improving it for 29 years. Blank said he was embarrassed by the bland all-white Volkswagen he had at age 16, so he painted a rooster on the driver's door. The move was the springboard to his career building art cars and documenting the Art Car movement.

Adorned with an ever-changing array of objects that Blank says helps him express his individuality, "Oh My God! is definitely a head-turner. This special exhibit is a must see.

The Movie

The art film "Automorphosis," also created by Blank, will be shown at 1 p.m. in the Museum Theater. It is included with the special two-for-one admission price.

If you could morph your car into a mobile work of art and drive it down the road for all to see, what would it look like? What would the world think of you and how would you be changed by it?

Creators of cars featured in the film provide their own individual answers to those questions. Blank's Camera Van is featured in the film along with a fork-and-spoon-covered "Peace Car" created by spoon bender Uri Geller; Howard Davis' obsession-driven-telephone collection and Leonard Knight a religious folk artist who's painted his vehicles as a testament to his faith.

Opening remarks before "Automorphosis" will be made by filmmaker Blank who will also take questions from the audience. Blank will also sign copies of his books.

Hands-on Fun

Patrons will be encouraged to draw on their own creativity by designing their own work of art using chalk on a "car."

A mini art car exhibit will be featured in the Museum parking lot to provide an up-close experience during "Wild Wheels: Art Car Day" at the National Automobile Museum located at 10 S. Lake Street.

Partners

This program is made possible in part by a grant from Nevada Humanities, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Sierra Arts Foundation is providing promotional assistance.

Museum Information

While the Museum is open on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. the two-for-one admission pricing is only available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the special exhibit. Admission is regularly $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $4 for children 6 to 18 years. Children age 5 and younger are free. Parking is free in the Museum lot.

Reno

Back for its 6th year, the Reno-Tahoe Blues Fest brings nine blues artists to Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch Regional Park for three intimate nights of live music Aug. 27 - 29, 2010. Performances include headliners Barbara Carr, Floyd Taylor and Miss E.C. Scott. Additional artists are Tia Carroll, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Ms. Jody, Chick Willis, Zac Harmon, Alabama Mike and The 3rd Degree and host Larry La La. Tickets are now available online at www.RenoTahoeBluesFest.com.

Scott is a fixture on the Bay Area blues scene in San Francisco and Oakland and honed her chops singing her blend of classic soul and gospel mixed with a dose of 90s funkiness. She began singing in clubs at just 16 and released her debut "Come Get Your Love" in 1995 after building a strong following and touring for several years on the festival circuit. Since then she's continued on to release three more albums including "The Other Side of Me."

After more than 50 years of performing, Carr still brings crowds of fans to their feet with her soulful blues voice. She started her musical career in the church as The Crosby Sisters in St. Louis. She became interested in R&B and later founded her own group, The Comets Combo, based on the inspiration from blues greats. From then on she performed with numerous groups and as a solo artist even making her way into country for a time. Truly dynamic, Carr is now recognized internationally for her amazing blues sound.

Taylor returns to Reno after performing at the fest's 2008 kickoff party. The son of legendary bluesman Johnny Taylor, he began singing in church at the age of five. He honed his skills throughout his school years and then on the blues stages of Chicago. In 1998 he was named Chicago Blues Society's Entertainer of the Year.

For 2010 the fest has changed its format offering a more intimate experience in the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch Regional Park. Accommodating just over 900, the setting features an amphitheater-style area as well as general admission lawn area.

The fest kicks off nightly at 6:30 p.m. and presents three artists each night. Tickets are on sale now with three-day reserved seat packages just $125 per person. Single day tickets are $30 per day for general admission lawn and $45 per day for reserved seating. Parking on site is free. Purchase online at www.Ticketmaster.com <http://www.Ticketmaster.com> or by calling 800-745-300.

The Reno-Tahoe Blues Fest, founded in 2005, was created to bring world-class blues to the Reno-Tahoe region and to celebrate the history, culture and spirit of the blues. The multi-day festival attracts audiences from around the country to hear some of the biggest names in blues including Etta James, Clarence Carter, Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Keb Mo, Mavis Staples, Jonny Lang and others. Established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Reno-Tahoe Blues Fest supports music education for youth in the Reno-Tahoe area through a scholarship program and ongoing assistance for school music equipment purchases and jazz band programs. Funds for the festival are raised through corporate sponsorships and ticket sales.

In the interest of recognizing the importance of teaching our Nevada children the importance of our roots, and the need to embody the entire state in an annual celebration which symbolizes the pride of being "Battle Born", the Nevada State Fair Board of Directors has unanimously adopted the idea of evolving the fair into a statewide heritage event that honors and recognizes the rich histories and lasting legacies of the pioneer men and women who first founded the Silver State during the mid 1800s.

Under the guise of the NV State Fair, "The Nevada Territory Wild West Fair" will continue to focus on traditional livestock shows, auctions, agricultural events, and exhibits, as well as carnival rides and live entertainment which are all vital and key components of any state fair. But, there will be new and exciting educational and interactive elements added to the fair this year that will embrace a Wild West theme as we celebrate and acknowledge Nevada's rich and storied history.

New venues and attractions to the fair in this, and in coming years, will include a Mining Camp, a Western Frontier Town, a Civil War Town and Camp, Chinatown, Native American Village, Railroad Yard, Stage Coach rides, Old Mexico, and so much more!

As the mystique of America's Old West continues to draw the attention of tourists from across the globe, it is our hope that as this new direction begins to take shape in the new decade, the Nevada Territory Wild West Fair will soon become a regularly visited tourist destination that will be the pride of our state and a boost to our local economy!

This endeavor is undoubtedly going to be a long and arduous one, but one that as Nevada citizens, we can all embrace and support. The public will be invited to "stake their claim" in the new fair by purchasing "honorary shares and deeds" for as little as $5 which will go directly to the building and development of a continuing tradition that has been a Nevada legacy for over 136 years. The Nevada Territory Wild West Fair makes its debut at the Reno Livestock Event Center, Aug 25-29, 2010.

Cowboy Poetry History and Background: Many of us have heard the term "cowboy poetry." Not all of us know exactly what it is. It's a tradition that harkens back several generations, when cowboys would entertain each other with music and poetry around range campfires, and that lively tradition continues today. Banish the vision of a 19th century recital of prim English verse. Get ready for dry wit, sweet sentiment, and a lot of patriotism-often accompanied by toe-tappin' music and a rhythmic beat.

Soroptimist International of Reno belongs to a worldwide organization of women in management and professions who work through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women throughout the world. Any one that has gazed upon Lake Tahoe can identify a sense of awe from the shear beauty of the lake and mountains, inspiring personal reflection. This July several seasoned artists will be displaying their art at their studios located around the Tahoe Basin, with the lake as a fitting backdrop. The emotions that derive from their work include descriptions that range from intimate to vivid

Melinda Plumbridge specializes in landscapes of vineyards, rivers, streams, alpine ponds and of course, Lake Tahoe, with the changes of light and atmosphere saturating her canvases in rich color. She is a veteran of dozens of solo and group shows, and most notably, three of her paintings were added to the permanent collection at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City.

Joyce Major began studying watercolors, oils and acrylics in 2000 after moving to the Lake Tahoe area. "I aspire to represent the outstanding, breathtaking diversity that we see every day when we look out our windows in the Sierra's", states Joyce. "When I'm painting, the scene captures my initial interest, but it's the flooding of my senses with light, smell, temperature, color, sound, form and composition that holds me and keeps me obsessed throughout the painting process".

Randall Stauss is a well-established artist in Lake Tahoe, painting nostalgic scenes of lake life. Randall started painting at an early age, formalizing his art education in Corvallis, Oregon. A 1980 move to the Northern shore of Lake Tahoe was the turning point in his painting, focusing initially on watercolors and expanding his pallet to include oils. Submissions of art pieces to the National Watercolor Society resulted in him being accepted as a signature member. His work is recognized through the soft and emotional color that enhances his themes.

Classically trained in art, Dianne Hub a long time resident of Lake Tahoe spent her youth skiing and hiking the Sierras. Through a lifetime of thoughtful observation in the Sierra Nevada, she is able to translate the splendor of mountains with their sharp crags and cliffs, coupled with the quaintness of lush valleys, in her oil paintings.

The American West provides the inspiration for Andy Skaff's vivid and light-filled landscapes. His paintings express the clear sense of depth and light, which are evident in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and high deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. At the 2009 North Tahoe Plein Air event, his painting, "Big Ben" received the People's Choice award. Andy is a resident instructor in plein air painting at the Martis Camp Folk School in Lake Tahoe.

On July 8, 2010, from 5-8 p.m., a reception will be held to launch the 17th. Annual juried 2010 Tahoe ARTour, hosted by the North Tahoe Art Center, located in Tahoe City, and attended by the 31 participating artists. The ARTour then opens for two weekends, including July 9-11 and July 16-18, from 10: am-5 pm. Booklet/Maps can be obtained at the Art Center, Tahoe and Truckee area grocery stores and Chamber of Commerce offices.

Fight of the Century Centennial

July 2 - July 4

Reno

It was called the "Fight of the Century." July 4, 1910, Jack Johnson, the first African-American World Heavyweight Champion, took on Jim Jeffries, the undefeated former heavyweight champion and racist America's "Great White Hope." Johnson won and the rest is well, history.

Now, 100 years later, Reno will spend America's biggest holiday weekend celebrating the legacy of Jack Johnson and what Nevada historian Guy Rocha calls "one of the greatest events in Nevada history."

The stacked weekend - scheduled for July 2-4, and corresponding with Reno's already-planned Fourth of July festivities - includes a gala Jack Johnson Pardon Dinner, multimedia presentation and silent auction, with past boxing champions and celebrities in attendance; a Breakfast with Champions featuring a celebrity panel discussion, autograph and book signings; as well as live professional boxing at the Reno Events Center promoted by Top Rank Boxing and Let's Get It On Promotions.

Event goers and boxing fans will also have the opportunity to visit the official Johnson and Jeffries training camps and attend the ceremonial bell ringing - featuring the original fight bell - will take place on the 100-year anniversary of its actual sounding, at the exact location of the fight.

A spectacle that grew to larger-than-life dimensions due to the racial tension prevalent during that era, the Johnson vs. Jeffries fight lasted 15 rounds before Jeffries' corner finally threw in the towel, admitting defeat and sparking race riots across America.

The outcome of the fight, according to Rocha, "reflected everything White America feared: A black man had won the heavyweight championship, but he wasn't an Uncle Tom, he didn't play by their rules. He had white girlfriends and flaunted the social norms at the time. So ultimately, they made him pay the price with the Mann Act. Jack Johnson was robbed of his legacy. He was treated like an outcast. He should have been at the top of his game and able to fight to hold onto the title until someone could beat him. But they didn't let him enjoy his glory."

Reno's 100-year anniversary celebration coincides with efforts already underway by U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, and U.S. Rep. Peter King of New York, to secure a pardon for Jack Johnson, who was unfairly convicted of violating the Mann Act - a law that made it a crime to transport women across state lines for "immoral purposes" - in 1913 because he kept company with white women at a time when doing so was considered shocking.
Organizers hope to convince President Barack Obama to travel to Reno to sign the pardon for Jack Johnson during the 100-year anniversary celebration of the Johnson-Jeffries fight this year.

"How fitting that Barack Obama would confer the pardon on a black man who was essentially treated horribly in a white world," Rocha said. "He broke a barrier in 2008 when he was elected President, just like Jack Johnson broke a barrier by becoming heavyweight champion in his day. It's too late to atone to Jack Johnson himself, but ultimately, justice delayed is better than no justice at all. We're trying to absolve ourselves from this stain on American history. We victimized this man, all because he was a great black boxer."

East meets West iconic pop culture sizzles when Martin Kreloff presents his "Stars and Sumos" collection to the Laura Henkel Fine Art Gallery on July 1 and 2, 2010. The exhibition runs until August 21, 2010.

Kreloff studied under the giants of Warhol and Lichchstein. He is best known for his portraits of classic iconic Hollywood celebrities whereby he equalizes the two extremes of fame and obscurity to present them with equal fanfare. His artwork is profoundly influenced by Miami's Art Deco tropical noir of Technicolor patterns. "Stars and Sumos" reflects Kreloff's witty and whimsical, contemporary style.

Gallery owner, Dr. Laura Henkel, states that "Kreloff's portraits are the ‘must haves' by elite clientele as he is able to capture the essence of his subjects with bold use of vibrant colors." He recently completed a portrait of Senator David Parks, which will be utilized in the Senator's campaign for his reelection.

Kreloff's talents were also recognized by the City of Las Vegas as he was commissioned to create public banners for the City's Cultural Corridor to be unveiled later this year.

The Laura Henkel Fine Art gallery is located at 107 E. Charleston, Suite 100, Las Vegas, Nevada 89104, in the heart of the Las Vegas Arts District. Gallery Hours: By Appointment Only

About Garth Brooks

Certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as the #1-selling solo artist in U.S. history, Garth Brooks has sold in excess of 128 million albums. He is the only solo artist in RIAA history to have six albums top the 10 million mark. His most recent release, The Ultimate Hits, has been certified five times platinum. Garth became the first artist to put out a simultaneous edition of his latest collection for a charitable cause. November 6, 2007 saw the launch of the pink edition of The Ultimate Hits, available only at the Susan G. Komen Web site. His body of work - including the groundbreaking No Fences, Ropin' The Wind, The Hits and Double Live - propelled country music as a genre to the front pages of newspapers worldwide and the covers of magazines, to the point where Forbes declared on its cover, "Country Conquers Rock," and featured Garth in a major music piece. According to the RIAA, Garth Brooks is the top-selling solo artist of the 20th century.

The key to his record-setting success lies within the personality and talent of Garth Brooks. It has been said that through the 1990s, Garth's only real competition was himself. He brought daring individualism and a love of music to the table. His wide range encompasses a variety of styles which include working-class blues, honky tonk, bluegrass and arena rock. His easy-going, approachable charisma was matched only by his fearless willingness to take chances and step outside the lines. He has had an unprecedented run so far, and opened the doors for many more country artists to follow.

Garth has received every accolade the recording industry can bestow on an artist, including two Grammys, 17 American Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 18 Academy of Country Music Awards, five World Music Awards, 12 People's Choice Awards and 36 Billboard Music Awards. He was named "Artist of the ‘90s" at the 1997 Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, received the Artist Achievement Award at the 1997 Billboard Music Awards and was named "Artist of the Decade" at the American Music Awards in 2000 and the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1999.

In the midst of one of the most successful careers in music history, Garth retired in 2001, delivered his last record for Capitol Records and moved back to Oklahoma to raise his children. While in retirement, when called upon by events greater than his own self-interest, he returned to the stage. The latest of these was when the President himself requested that Garth headline President Obama's Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. He performed as Barack and Michelle Obama, their girls, Joe and Jill Biden and a crowd of over 300,000 lined the mall from the Lincoln Memorial all the way to the Washington Monument. It was a moment in history when all did the "wave" to Garth's performance of "Shout" while the President sang along. Once again, Garth was called upon by the network to perform for President Obama's very first late night TV appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. When the Governor of California asked for Garth's help, he responded by performing five concerts in two days, where proceeds from 83,000 tickets sold were donated to efforts to prevent fire catastrophes. Portions of the live concerts were shown as a TV special, "Garth Brooks: Live in L.A." where viewers donated to the organization Fire Intervention Relief Effort (FIRE).

Oct. 15, 2009, Brooks announced that he was out of retirement: "I am naturally nervous, but it feels good to be out from under the low ceiling of ‘retirement' I put on myself." Brooks has entered a five-year "relationship" with Las Vegas resort developer, Steve Wynn.

Nevada Humanities presents the 2010 Nevada Humanities Chautauqua festival, June 22-26 at the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, 6000 Bartley Ranch Road, Reno. Explore the theme "Public Legends, Private Lives" and meet legendary characters during the evening programs, including P.T. Barnum, Buffalo Bill, Emma Nevada, Bonnie and Clyde, Babe Ruth, Paul Robeson, Woody Guthrie, Joe Louis and Julia Child. Each night begins with a musical performance featuring a local band. Music starts at 6 p.m., and Chautauqua performances begin at 7 p.m.

Nevada Humanities Chautauqua tickets are available online at nevadahumanities.org and at the gate (cash or check only) the evening of the performance (reserved seating is only available for purchase online). General admission is $15/night or $45/weeklong pass for four shows; reserved seating is $30/night or $90/weeklong pass for four shows. For more information contact Nevada Humanities at 775-784-6587 or visit nevadahumanities.org.

Nevada Humanities Chautauqua blends the insights of historical research with the fun of theatrical entertainment. The Chautauqua format is simple: a performer, in the guise of a historical figure such as Babe Ruth or Julia Child, tells "first-hand" stories about important episodes in the character's life. After the monologue, the audience and performer engage in a lively give and take. Finally, the performer emerges from character to respond to questions that could not be answered in character. One of the longest-running Chautauqua festivals in the country, Nevada Humanities Chautauqua was created by Nevada Humanities in Reno in 1992.

In addition to Nevada Humanities Chautauqua evening performances, community events take place throughout Northern Nevada during Nevada Humanities Chautauqua week. On the mornings following each evening Chautauqua performance, people are invited to gather to meet Chautauqua performers, ask questions, and enjoy coffee and treats. Coffee with the Chautauquans is a free event and takes place Thursday, June 24 and Friday, June 25 from 7:30-9 a.m.; and Saturday, June 26 and Sunday, June 27 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Sundance Bookstore, 1155 West Fourth Street, Reno. Visit nevadahumanities.org for a complete roster of programs.

To celebrate the life and legacy of Julia Child, Nevada Humanities and Nothing To It! Culinary Center have come together in 2010 to create a program that combines the romance and fun of learning culinary skills inspired by Julia Child's cuisine with the enlightening fun of a Chautauqua performance. The Julia Child Show: A Nevada Humanities Chautauqua Culinary Workshop, will take place Saturday, June 26, at 11 a.m., at the Nothing To It! Culinary Center, 225 Crummer Lane, Reno. Join a special "studio audience" as Chef Lara Ritchie makes a guest appearance on the "Julia Child Show," hosted by nationally acclaimed Chautauqua performer Mary Ann Jung as Julia Child. Workshop tickets are available online at nothingtoit.com for $55, which includes admission to the June 26 evening performance at Bartley Ranch.

Nevada Humanities Chautauqua begins on Tuesday, June 22, at 6 p.m., at the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater, Bartley Ranch Regional Park, Reno, with an entire evening of Young Chautauqua performances by some of the program's most talented performers in a free public program. In addition, throughout the week of Nevada Humanities Chautauqua, Reno's Young Chautauqua participants have a chance to showcase their talent with daily performances. Tuesday, June 22 through Friday, June 25, 9:30 a.m.-12 noon, all Young Chautauqua performers have a chance to perform on stage under the tent at the Flying B Pavilion at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, Reno. The program is free and open to the public, and children in the audience are invited to participate in hands-on craft activities. Nevada Humanities created the Young Chautauqua program in Reno in the early 1990s at the request of enthusiastic young people who wanted to know how they "could do it, too." Since then, Young Chautauqua has spread to other Nevada communities and has been adopted by other states for use in classrooms around the nation.

Salgado performed for six years with Robert Cray's band and as the lead vocalist for Santana. He has been nominated for several National Blues Awards by the Blues Foundation, including Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.

One of blues and R&B music's premier artists, Janiva Magness possesses a raw and earthy voice that draws the crowd in from the first note. In 2009, she was honored as the B.B. Mixing blues, rock, rockabilly, country and gospel into a genre he calls "rock-a-blues," Clearwater continues to record and recently released "West Side Strut."

Returning this year is Ironing Board Sam, who used an ironing board stand to support his keyboard during his early years of piano playing. After moving to New Orleans in 1974, he was dubbed "The Eighth Wonder of the World," in response to his ability to strap the keyboard around his shoulders and walk throughout the club continuing to play his tunes and entertain the crowd.

Reno

The Summit Reno, Reno-Lake Tahoe's ultimate shopping experience, will transform into an art and craft gallery during its second summertime Art Festival. The free event, located in the Talbots and Williams-Sonoma parking lot, runs Saturday and Sunday June 19-20 from 10 am to 5 pm each day, will give attendees the opportunity to meet with 50 talented artists and artisans as they present their original works against the backdrop of Reno's premier shopping destination.

On display will be a wide variety of arts and crafts including photography, watercolor and oil paintings, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork and much more. Among this year's featured artists is Marianne Hunter of Reno who creates enamel jewelry, all of which are one of a kind with the number, metals, poem, signature, and date engraved on the back. "I begin the design process by searching for the theme," says Hunter. "Sometimes the inspiration comes from a particular stone, sometimes from my garden or books...sometimes it comes from the wild blue. Next step is a drawing to scale in full detail of enamel, metals and stones. The enamel form is traced onto the metal and sawed free." Her elaborate, colorful pieces are individually hand-fabricated, textured and engraved to present the enamels and stones in a painterly continuation of imagery.

Diana Ahrens of Reno creates custom mixed media pieces for homes and businesses. She works in mosaic-type mixed media to design wall art of all sizes. Her process involves using a very light wood composite and acrylics in complimentary colors for her signature backgrounds. She then overlays the treated wood with multiple layers of pastels to reach her intended deep and rich color contrasts. To finish the work, she calls upon her mastery of stained glass design by selecting special cuts of stained glass that are applied over the painting to accent and highlight the underlying work. Her pieces include designs of wine bottles, martini glasses and florals.

Judy Dailey of Quincy, Calif. uses multi-medium techniques applied in layers to bring ceramic tiles to life. Each piece is hand-crafted and many are custom-framed by her husband, Skip, who is a woodworker. Daily creates a wide of variety of styles and color combinations to fit any designing need, incorporating themes that are inspired by different cultures including Asian, African and Egyptian as well as garden and tropical décor.

Julie and Dennis Johnson of Cool, Calif. create glass sculptures in radiant shades of colors. Flowing in brilliant hues, their glass art objects, which include castles, trees, horses and more, are created by applying pure gold to molten glass. Every sculpture is a handmade original and the couple sells their creations only at art shows across the country.

Additional artists participating in The Summit® Art Festival include John Manley of Washoe Valley, Nev. who will showcase his unique ceramic vessels -- porcelain and stoneware art pots up to 4-feet tall; Jack Durnford of Hood, Calif. whose mixed media wall art uses wood and concrete to create serene forms; and Patrick McCauley of Nevada City, Calif. who will display his original sculpted vessels made of exotic woods from around the world.

Lake Tahoe Entertainment will also be at The Summit Art Festival, playing jazz and soft rock vibe. The Summit Reno is located at Exit 57B off Hwy 395 at South Virginia and Mt. Rose Hwy (State Route 431).

Reno

NadaDada Motel 2010 asks artists to, once again, "Get a room, Make a show," June 17-20 in Reno.

Over 300 artists of all media and disciplines have participated in this art gathering for the past 4 years. Over 5000 people have visited the event. National mainstream media has covered NadaDada. Even the New York Times wrote about it last year (June 22nd).

Artists are taking action and they simply "get a room, make a show." The concept is simple and the do-it-yourself attitude of these self-starters has brought a creative pride to downtown Reno as well as direct revenue to local small businesses and artisans. As revenue for public art funding dwindles, Reno City Councilman Dave Aiazzi praises NadaDada Motel as a positive example of self-initiated action.

No particular theme or genre is suggested as there are no curators. Artists promote themselves and the variety of art ranges from painting and sculpture, video and photography to neon, installation, performance, jewelry, as well as the new and uncategorized media. For artists to open motel rooms to the public, the exhibitions have been a more personal way to connect with an audience. Each room is an independent art show.

Locations are the motels along Arlington from the Townhouse Motorlodge at 2nd St. to Super 8 at 5th St. Also Strega Bar, 2 blocks South of the river on Arlington, hosting "5 Rooms at the Witch". An additional event featuring printmakers will be happening at Oxbow Press at 2035 Dickerson Road, "Naughty; Taboo; Just Plain Wrong", a print portfolio exchange.

Live entertainment is scheduled to happen in the Trocadero Lounge at the Hotel El Cortez on Friday, June 18th, Strega Bar, Saturday, June 19th and the Townhouse Motorlodge all 3 days. Maps of various locations involved will be made available before and during the event.

This DIY artists' movement began in 2007 when six artists joined forces in Reno, not so much to be radical-as the artists from their Dada namesake would have had it-but simply to create an opportunity to exhibit their work and to offer the same to others. The artist/organizers worked with the management of historic Hotel El Cortez in downtown Reno and artists flocked to the event to rent their own rooms and open their doors to the public-over 1200 people came to that first year's event! The number of artists involved during the course of the first 3 years has risen from 6 to 300. NadaDada adherents are from the disciplines of visual art, music, poetry, performance and combinations of such.

Subsequently other motels and venues became involved and national exposure has ensued. An exhibition featuring selected NadaDada artists was held in Los Angeles this year and two NadaDada exhibitions in a Las Vegas museum have happened.

Reno's NadaDada Motel will happen from June 17th to the 20th, 10am to 10pm 2010 in the Town House Motorlodge, Star of Reno, Keno 1 and 2, Lido, In Town, Super 8, Strega Bar, Oxbow Press and with entertainment at El Cortez' Trocadero Lounge. 100 artists are expected to participate in the upcoming Reno motel event. Bicycle ricksaws will be on hand accepting donations and transporting the public from location to location. Aside from admission for shows at the Trocadero, it's all FREE!

Tahoe Star Tours announced today that two additional event dates — the first of which includes a live dance performance — have been added to its summer event line up at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort. The Bellē Contemporary Dance Company, under the direction of Cari Cunningham and composed by Ty Williams, will come together with Tahoe Star Tours to celebrate the Milky Way Galaxy in a special performance on Friday, August 6 at 9 p.m. An additional Tahoe Star Tours event has also been added to the schedule on Sunday, August 8.

The Friday evening event will combine dance, poetry and science during a 60 minute performance, followed by telescopic observation. Led by star guide and poet Tony Berendsen, president of the Northern Nevada Science Coalition, Tahoe Star Tours offer a unique experience featuring a breathtaking view into the heavens. Hosted at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort for the eighth season, Tahoe Star Tours is the premiere star tours experience in Lake Tahoe and an educational evening for guests of all ages.

"Tahoe Star Tours was already a very unique star gazing experience, and new this season, we've begun to partner theme based performances with star gazing," said Berendsen. "People coming to Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort in the summer to participate in our star gazing tours now have the opportunity to experience a very special performance by the Bellē Contemporary Dance Company that was choreographed specifically for Tahoe Star Tours."

Every tour is as different as the sky above, but all include a poetry reading, a fun space quiz with prizes, a laser tour of the stars and constellations, and a telescopic viewing with equipment provided by Celestron, the world's leading telescope maker. Tours are highly interactive and allow guests to have a hands-on experience at amateur astronomy.

Tahoe Star Tours typically take place from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and meet at the top of the Highlands Gondola at the Ritz-Carlton Destination Club. From there, guests are escorted to the viewing location on the deck of the Big Springs Day Lodge, located mid-mountain at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort. Proper walking footwear is recommended.

Scotty’s Castle Organ Concert

Scotty's Castle

Death Valley National Park

Pipe organs like the Welte-Mignon Pipe Organ in Scotty's Castle were used to accompany silent films. By the time the organ was installed in the Scotty's Castle Music Room, talking movies had replaced silent films.

This June, theatre organist Don Thompson will take participants back to the silent film era with an exciting repertoire that will entertain listeners of all ages. This unique concert venue is available one weekend each year, thanks in part to a crew of interns from historic preservation programs across the United States. In June, curatorial interns remove the historic furniture in the Music Room in Scotty's Castle. During their four week stay in Death Valley, interns clean Scotty's Castle and learn from National Park Service professionals how to care for museum collections.

The Welte-Mignon theater pipe organ features 1121 pipes, a grand piano, glockenspiel, xylophone, chimes, orchestra bells, sleigh bells, bird calls and a drum and cymbal assortment, and cost more than $50,000 to purchase, deliver and install in 1928.

The dates for this year's concerts are June 11 & 12. There are only 40 seats for each concert and every performance in the past three years has sold out. The Friday night performance will be at 7:00 p.m. There will be two concerts on Saturday — seats are available for the 7:00 p.m. concert on Saturday, but the 5:30 p.m performance has sold out. The ticket price will be $35 per person and the proceeds support the annual maintenance and tuning of the pipe organ and the maintenance of the Deagan chimes in the Chimes Tower.

To make reservations, call the Death Valley Natural History Association at 800-478-8564 ext 10. For more information call Scotty's Castle at 760-786-2392 or check the website at www.nps.gov/deva.

Don Thompson started playing the organ in his teen years. His international career includes concerts all over Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. In addition to his concert performances, Don played in many organ pizza parlors in the United States and Canada. He currently resides in Palm Springs, CA.
